FIRST UNDEREXPOSURES, which trace back to my earliest film images, were simple errors in calculation. I certainly regarded them, in those days, as mistakes, consigning them to my “no” pile. Over the years, however, I came to love something in the quiet, over-saturated look of the things, and began trying to achieve the look on purpose. And now, as I prepare to shoot Ektachrome slide film again for the first time in more than a decade, I may intentionally starve the moody film stock of light….just a bit.
